Review:
John Hawkes continues to surprise with a chameleon as the design of unusual characters. This time the game Marc obrien, 36-year-old polio victim who spent his life in an iron lung level. Based on a true story, obrien and romantic poet, who has never had a sexual experience. After listening to his priest (William H. Macy perfect embodiment of Berkeley radical father), he contacted a therapist and interferes with sexual surrogate, Helen Hunt. The collections form the core of this film, both tender and take the audience on a journey and Marc self-awareness and discovery. Hawkes is simply amazing. He imbues character with humor, innocence, hope and harsh in what can only be described as a tourist de force performance. Hunt is equally adept in his role, combining professionalism, playfulness, sensuality and compassion in a series of sessions that require full nudity. Both men are brave in the pursuit of truth and humanity and achieve Oscar-caliber performances, fine direction by writer / director Ben Lewin.
